ORVIETO · TODI · UMBRIA
Two Cities, Two Perspectives
Two cities shaped by height, light and time.
The void that holds everything up
Orvieto does not simply rest on the land: it exists above a void carved over centuries by human hands.
Light as a material
Orvieto Cathedral is not simply something to look at: it is experienced through gold, shadow and surfaces that change with the movement of the sun.
Two cities, one shared architectural tension
Todi and Orvieto are shaped by the same principle: the search for balance through elevation.
Orvieto & Todi: Two Cities, Two Perspectives
Halfway between the Tiber Valley and the Paglia Valley, Umbria ceases to be simply green and becomes suspended stone.
The day begins in Todi, perched on its hilltop, where squares and civic palaces reveal an urban order designed to endure rather than impress. The streets do not lead towards a single monument: they lead towards a point of view.
The journey then continues to Orvieto, built on a plateau of volcanic tuff concealing kilometres of tunnels, wells and cellars excavated over the course of two thousand years. The city visible above ground is only half of the story.
Orvieto Cathedral appears with a façade that does not merely introduce the building, but announces it: mosaics, pinnacles and an architectural front designed to be appreciated from both near and far.
Inside, the Chapel of San Brizio preserves a cycle of frescoes whose intensity and visionary character anticipated aspects of the artistic language later associated with Michelangelo.
During the excursion, lunch is enjoyed in a restaurant overlooking the cliff itself, with a cuisine shaped more by the season than by the expectations of a tourist menu.
